The Bermuda 1 - 2, race single-handed from Newport, Rhode Island, to St. George, Bermuda and double-handed on the return leg, is a biannual event sponsored by the Goat Island Yacht Club in Newport and the St. George's Dinghy and Sport Club in Bermuda. The first race was in 1977.
The year I entered was the 7th race. Single-handing is largly a man's game. No woman had ever gone over the finish line. In the nine previous races only one woman had competed. In 1989 two of us had entered; a Canadian woman and myself. The other lady had problems at the beginning and had to return.
Bermuda is a small island approximately 635 miles off the coast of North Carolina. To get there by boat, the Gulf Stream must be crossed. The finish line is just outside St. Georges harbour.
The race committee has in place rules and regulations that contribute to a relatively safe race. Even so, weather and the ocean itself holds surprises. Everyone asks why I did such a thing, wasn't I scared? I had been ocean sailing on several other boats to Bermuda and love the ocean. There is a certain feeling of accomplishment when single-handing. I decided on the race, not because I am a racer - just the opposite - but because it was an organized group and if I should get into any trouble, there would be someone on the lookout. More information on this race will be added later.
